Located just outside Victoria, CFB Esquimalt has provided a Naval presence on the west coast since the earliest days of the British colony on Vancouver Island. In the late 1840’s the rivalry between the United States and Great Britain over the trading rights to the Pacific Northwest created a need for the first military presence in the colony. In 1855 the Royal Navy began the development of a base in Esquimalt.

Following the establishment of Fort Victoria it was felt a permanent British Naval presence was needed and so in June of 1865 the Royal Naval Establishment was officially created at Esquimalt to provide maintenance and supply facilities for the fleet. Thus began a long tradition of support and contribution by Canadian Forces personnel to the Greater Victoria area.
